On Thursday, November 7th, 2024, we hosted an event at the Startit Center in Novi Sad titled “Terraform and Terragrunt in Practice: Automate Infrastructure Managing Processes.” Interest in the event was exceptionally high; more than 110 attendees joined us, including DevOps engineers, software engineers, students, and IT enthusiasts. The venue was filled to capacity, confirming once again how critical Infrastructure as Code has become in modern IT environments.
Speaker: Andrija Vojnović - DevOps Lead with Years of Hands-On Experience
The session was delivered by our colleague Andrija Vojnović, a DevOps Lead at CYBERLAB with extensive experience working with AWS, Azure, and IaC tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation. Throughout his career, Andrija has worked on designing and maintaining complex, scalable, and secure cloud systems, focusing on automation, CI/CD pipelines, and modular infrastructure architectures. Through practical examples, he demonstrated what real-world IaC workflows look like and how IaC becomes an essential part of daily development and operations.
What Does Infrastructure Automation Look Like in Practice?
Andrija walked participants through the complete process of automated infrastructure management, from the first Terraform files to fully structured production environments powered by Terragrunt. The presentation covered the following core topics:
1. Fundamentals of Terraform and the IaC Approach
The audience learned why IaC has become an industry standard and how Terraform enables:
- stability and environment consistency
- version-controlled infrastructure
- accelerated development
- fewer manual errors
2. Terraform Workflow and Key Components
Andrija explained the most important building blocks and commands:
- providers, resources, variables, data sources, state files, backend configurations, as well as init, plan, apply, and destroy.
Participants gained insight into how to manage Terraform state properly, why remote backends are a must, and how to avoid conflicts in collaborative environments.
3. Modular Structure and the Terraform Registry
The session covered module organization, the benefits of using reusable modules, and examples of how official registry modules can be integrated into cloud architectures efficiently.
4. Terragrunt – Structure, Rules, and Benefits
The second half of the session focused on Terragrunt, which drew the most attention from the audience. Through concrete examples, Andrija demonstrated how Terragrunt simplifies work in complex environments by providing:
- clear hierarchical structures (live / modules)
- elimination of duplicated code
- centralized configuration logic
- dependency blocks
- run-all commands across multiple modules
- consistent remote state management across environments
Attendees left with a clear understanding of how Terragrunt keeps large systems clean, organized, and scalable.
Best Practices and Lessons Learned
As in any real-world project, IaC comes with its own challenges. Andrija shared the most common mistakes and recommendations:
- inconsistent state management
- oversized monolithic modules
- manually created cloud resources (which later cause conflicts)
- improper Terraform versioning
- poorly structured environment hierarchies
- ignoring lifecycle rules and resource ordering
Each challenge served as a valuable example of how systematic thinking and solid architecture prevent problems before they appear.

The “Terraform and Terragrunt in Practice” event demonstrated that the local IT community is highly active and eager to learn. Infrastructure automation, modular architectures, and sustainable cloud systems are becoming increasingly important, and this meetup once again highlighted how shared learning strengthens the entire community.
